What happens in buildings produces around 30% of California's greenhouse gas emissions. Most of the buildings that will be with us in 2050 are already here; the rest will be constructed to meet the applicable code at that time. The Existing Building Energy Efficiency Action Plan, each successive update to the Building Energy Efficiency Standards, and a variety of other program efforts must all contribute to our success in reducing Carbon emissions. Buildings - through decisions made by their owners, occupants and service providers - will become active contributors to the smooth, reliable operation of the modern electric grid; and loads will become increasingly electric as generation decarbonizes and decentralizes. Commissioner McAllister will provide his perspectives on what California is, and will be, doing to promote high-performing, low-carbon buildings.
